Business honored for hiring veterans
Veteran’s Day is not until Monday but, an Upper Peninsula business was honored Friday for employing men and women who have served our country.
The Michigan Works! Job Force Board awarded SCSI Cleaning and Maintenance for hiring veterans.
The business’s workforce is about 20% veteran workers.
“I was surprised, and we’re very thankful. We did not expect it,” SCSI Senior Supervisor Art Menard said. “We do our job here as we do it all the time…it was a complete surprise to be recognized for helping veterans out.”
“To be recognized from the governor and all the representatives, it is an honor,” Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad Manager Mike Logan said. “It means a lot to the employees that work here through our companies as well.”
“We’re showing appreciation, plus the many talents that service people have learned and can bring to these companies,” Michigan Works! Job Force Board President Will Carne said.
The Job Force Board has One Stop Centers in the six central counties in the U.P. that helps veterans find employment.
“Veterans get together, meet each other, interview, test, and then put to work,” Carne said. “It’s a wonderful partnership, wonderful coordination.”
The award was presented to SCSI in conjunction with November called Hire a Veteran Month.
