Brush fire heats up Onota Township

Chocolay Township firefighters were on the move today to contain a brush fire in Onota Township.

Firefighters received the call around 12:30 this afternoon from a house located at 859 Sand River Drive. The AuTrain Fire Department assisted, with approximately 20 responders on scene.

Thanks to the heavy support, the blaze was contained within 10 to 15 minutes.

“The garage was on fire when we arrived, they were able to knock it down quickly.  It was actually threatening two other residences but we were able to stop it before it burned the residences,” said Lee Gould, Chocolay Township Assistant Fire Chief.

With trees still smoldering, firefighters had to take extra time to put out hot spots that kept popping up. The garage suffered minor damage and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
