Brown Takes Bronze at Senior Nationals
April 12, 2011

MARQUETTE– Six United States Olympic Education Center freestyle wrestlers placed in the top seven at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Cleveland Ohio, April 8-10 to qualify for the U.S. World Team Trials in June.

Northern Michigan University junior Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) led the team with a third-place finish in the 55-kilogram weight class. Brown defeated Sharon Jacobson (Army) 9-3, 3-6, 5-2 to claim bronze.

“I felt great wrestling for a change. I felt confident and that’s a big mental breakthrough for me,” said Brown. “For the future, I need to keep a positive, confident mentality and worry about myself and nothing else.”

Brown pinned Sarah Hildebrandt (PWC), Alex Kovalick (Waldorf College), and Shauna Isbell (Lindenwood University) before facing Jacobson and finished with a 4-1 record.

Marquette Senior High School junior Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) placed fourth at 48 kg. CC Weber (Sunkist Kids) defeated Golston 2-1, 4-0 in the third-place match.

Golston finished with a 3-2 record, including wins over Opelia Felipe (UC Women’s Wrestling) 5-0, 6-0 and USOEC teammate Patricia Hill (Merrill, Wis.) 8-2, 4-0.

MSHS senior Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.) placed fourth at 59 kg with an overall record of 4-2. Burkert pinned Gabrielle Klein (Waldorf College), Denise Yanez (Lindenwood University), teammate Andrea Orozco (Soledad, Calif.), and Cianah Hee (UC Women’s Wrestling).

“I was focused mentally and that was a big part of the success. I try to have a good mindset and game plan when I go into competitions,” said Burkert. “Having my hand raised at the end of a match in general feels good”

Three freestylers took seventh place: Senior Laura Conway (Traverse City, Mich.) at 72 kg, freshman Monique Dilliner (Kailua, Hawaii) at 67 kg, and sophomore Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y.) at 48 kg.
