Boil water advisory in effect

The Village of Ontonagon Water Department has issued a Boil Water Notice for all water customers on Highways M-64 and M-107 between White Pine and the Village of Ontonagon, including Porcupine Mountain State Park and Silver City.  Customers should boil their water for one minute before drinking, preparing food, making ice, or washing dishes.  Customers should use bottle water or boil their water until further notice.

Customers in the Village of Ontonagon and White Pine are not affected by the Boil Notice.

According to Joseph Erickson, Ontonagon Village Manager, a hydrant failed early Friday morning along M-64 and caused a major water leak, dropping  the water pressure in the main between White Pine and Ontonagon.  The Village crew has stopped the leak and is refilling the system.

As a precaution, Michigan Drinking Water standards require a Boil Water notice be issued until tests confirm the water is safe.  The Village is communicating with the MDEQ Drinking Water Staff on this issue.  Water service should be restored to customers by this afternoon and the Boil Notice will be in effect.
