Blues prepare for Zone Tournament

The American Legion Zone Five Tournament begins on Wednesday.

Nine U.P. teams will fight for the top three spots, which guarantees those three teams a trip to the Tier II State Tournament in Hudson.

The Kingsford Blues won the Tier II championship last season.

After winning the Mid Pen Conference title a week ago, the Blues would like the opportunity to defend their championship in two weeks time.

But first, they have business to take care of in Menominee.

“It’s awesome to be playing this kind of baseball right now,” said Blues pitcher Aidan Weinke. “We’re playing our best baseball of the season right now. We’re just getting runs on the board and our defense has been stellar all year, so we are just putting the pieces together,” added Weinke.

“This team is scary when we’re on a roll,” said Blues outfielder Cole Tengesdahl. “We’re possibly playing our best ball of the year right now at tournament time, so this is great.”

“I wasn’t on the team last year, but I can imagine for the kids who were on the team last year that there is a lot of pressure to win it this year again”, said Blues infielder Brien Johnson.

Escanaba and Ishpeming will play the first game of the tournament at 12pm CST on Wednesday.

The Zone Five Championship game is set for Sunday at 12pm CST.
