Black History Month films at NMU

Three civil rights films will kick off Black History Month at Northern Michigan University. The three stories are all different in nature to cater to a variety of tastes.

“The William Still Story” introduces a man who helped the Underground Railroad prosper. The former undercover conductor gives great insight into his daunting journey.

“He’s a name you don’t often hear,” NMU Multicultural Education Resource Center associate director Shirley Brozzo said. “You hear of Harriet Tubman, but this man also helped 650 people to freedom, so I think it’s a very important story that needs to be told.”

Upcoming films include “Scottsboro: An American Tragedy”, about a case in Alabama that helped incite the civil rights movement. Two white women accused nine black teens of rape. That film can be seen on February 19th. On February 27th, there will be a showing of “The Loving Story”, which explores the legalization of interracial marriage.
