Bishop Sample's U.P. Journey

The U.P.’s Catholic bishop is about to do something unique to celebrate the spirit of the U.P.’s first bishop, Venerable Frederic Baraga.

Marquette Bishop Alexander Sample will travel the length and width of the U.P. in a single weekend later this month.

He’ll do it on the weekend of October 20th and 21st.

The diocese says Bishop Sample will travel more than 1,100 miles that weekend, beginning and ending in Marquette.

The bishop will celebrate mass that weekend in Copper Harbor, Menominee, Ironwood and Drummond Island.

Bishop Sample is doing this to open the Year of Faith in the Diocese of Marquette.

Pope Benedict XVI has called for the worldwide Year of Faith, which runs from next Thursday until November 2013.

Here’s the bishop’s mass schedule for that weekend:

Saturday, 10/20, 10 am: Our Lady of the Pines Mission, Copper Harbor (procession begins at 9:45 at the Grant Township Community Center)

Saturday, 4 pm Central: Holy Spirit Parish, Menominee (procession begins at 3:45 at Menominee Catholic Central School)

Sunday, 10/21, 8 am Central: Our Lady of Peace Parish, Ironwood (procession begins at 7:45 at the corner of Aurora St. & Suffolk St.)

Sunday, 6pm: St. Florence Mission, Drummond Island (procession begins inside St. Florence Cemetery)

Bishop Sample says he encourages anyone interested to attend any of the masses, join him in any of the processions just prior to each mass, or to follow him during any part of his two-day journey.

He says anyone who can’t do any of those things can still read updates about the trip by following him on Twitter @BishopSample or by heading to Facebook.
