Bi-Partisan Michigan Support for Shipwreck Museum Bills

In Washington, D.C., Republican Congressman Dan Benishek has introduced a bill to correct a land patent issue for the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point.

The Congressman’s office says it’s a simple, commonsense legislation necessary to modify a patent issued by the Department of Interior in 1998 to reflect a 2002 development plan to improve the facility.

A Senate version of the bill introduced by Democratic Senator Carl Levin passed the U.S. Senate in October.

“The Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point honors those who were lost and sacrificed while bravely navigating the Great Lakes,” remarked Congressman Benishek. “By improving the museum’s facilities we can continue to honor and understand that maritime tradition.”

Congressman Benishek’s bill was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. As a member of the Committee, Rep. Benishek hopes to hold a hearing and markup of the bill in the coming months. Once the bill passes the House, it can be sent to the President to be signed into law.
