Benishek not a fan of President Obama’s new gun measures

WASHINGTON D.C. — Local politicians voiced their opinions about President Obama’s latest measures.

Representative Dan Benishek released the following statement:

“I’ve been a gun owner my entire life, and I know how important the 2nd Amendment is to the culture of Northern Michigan. To that end, I will always fight to ensure that the Constitutional rights of the American people are protected. The President’s decision to circumvent Congress and impose his own policy preferences on the American people undermines the legislative process and sets a dangerous precedent for executive power over our Constitutional rights,” said Dr. Benishek.

Dr. Benishek continued, “I believe we must do more to ensure that firearms stay out of the hands of the mentally ill. That is why I have been a supporter and advocate for Rep. Tim Murphy’s bill to overhaul and improve the mental health care system in our country. Real efforts such as these will actually reduce gun violence, but sadly, the President’s political posturing through executive order has undermined his ability to work with Congress on this issue and many others.”
