Benishek addresses college costs

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today issued the following statement about the need to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling for the upcoming school year:

“Partisan politics put us in this position. I believe the emphasis needs to be placed on the importance of higher education and how we can make it more affordable for our young people.

Today, half of all college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed. This is simply unacceptable. We are encouraging our children and grandchildren to go to school to become better prepared for the careers they desire, but they are being saddled with debt and directed to the unemployment line.

For many, going to college is the American Dream – it was for me. Like many in Northern Michigan, I didn’t have it easy growing up. I worked hard, saved money, earned scholarships and still needed to take out student loans. They are a great help in going to college, but come at a cost. Today’s fragile economy makes this problem a top priority. Boosting our economy starts with making college more affordable for current and future generations.”
