Back pain got you down? Dr. Coccia is here to help

ISHPEMING — The spine is one of the most important parts of the body, but as we get older, it seems to be one of the first things to go.

That’s why UP Health System-Bell hosted an informational session Tuesday night called “The Aging Process and Your Spine.”

“The UP is a unique place. We have a disproportionate number of older adults but our adults tend to have expectations that exceed those of the rest of the nation. Our older adults are out moving snow, out golfing, cross country skiing, even biking on mountain bike trails! They want to be active. In order to maintain those goals, you need to maintain your spine health,” said Dr. Craig Coccia, Director of Neuroscience at UP Health System-Marquette, and the presenter for the event.

The presentation covered different types of back pain commonly experienced as well as treatment options ranging from physical therapy to surgery. Of course, prevention is often the best course of action.

“The key when we look at spine health is maintaining, preserving and restoring function. We do that, one, through exercise, maintaining our flexibility, our cardiovascular fitness, and our strength. Strength is probably an underestimated factor in health,” Dr. Coccia added.
