AWOL Army Soldiers Charged

Two soldiers from the U.S. Army have been arraigned in 93rd District Court in Munising o weapons charges.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post, Munising Detachment, arrested the two subjects Saturday. They have been identified as 20 year old Powers Ashley Goldwire from Fort Campbell, Kentucky and 21 year old Matthew Shay Cox from Radford, Virginia.

Goldwire was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm. Cox was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.

The two were reportedly walking through the city of Munising with a handguns and a stolen rifle. The pair of soldiers had reportedly formulated a plan to go AWOL (Absent Without Leave) and was attempting to enter Canada.

Upper Michigan law enforcement was notified by police over the weekend to be on the look out for these two individuals. The men were said to have been making threatening statements and carrying weapons. The men were taken into custody without incident. Police seized a 40-caliber handgun, two knives and a 22-caliber rifle. The incident is still under investigation.
