IRON COUNTY — Two men are lucky to be alive after the ATV they were riding in crashed through the ice Saturday afternoon.
Just after 2:30 p.m., two men from Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, ventured out onto Michigamme Lake in Iron County. The two men, riding in a Polaris Ranger side-by-side, drove over thin ice near a tributary.
The vehicle went through the ice and in approximately 25-feet of water. Both men were able to get out of the water and back to shore safely. Police say an ice salvage company is removing the ATV from the water.
Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano is reminding residents to stay safe on the ice once the warm weather returns. Valesano says the unseasonably warm temperatures have already caused ice to deteriorate in some places.
