Artwork on display at nursing center

Local artists are getting the chance to showcase their work at an Upper Peninsula nursing home.

Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette is holding its 4th Annual Art Exhibit.  This year’s theme of flowers.

Artists display their work for the residents, and this year two residents have art work on display.

“This is the first year we have one of our residents (participate),” Activity Director at Norlite Nursing Center Vanessa Miazga said.  “She submitted a piece, so we’re really excited to get her out and do those things.  And she’s really excited to participate this year with us.”

“I’ve done sketching and stuff like that for years,” Mable Patz, another Norlite resident who submitted a painting.  “I figure I’m an artist, and if I want to change something, I never make a mistake.”

The art exhibit allows community members and artists to interact with residents.  Miazga says many of the residents have an interest in art.

“A lot of our residents here really enjoy art and do art themselves,” she said.  “It’s really nice for them to get together and have a common interaction with something so they can socialize and get to know other local artists, and know that it’s just not them the like to do art.”

Marquette residents are more than welcome to come to Norlite and vote for their favorite piece or art until 8 a.m. Thursday.  Thursday night there will be an awards reception at the nursing center for the artists and residents.
