Art exhibit highlights Marquette landmarks

A new type of community art exhibit highlights the classic architecture of downtown Marquette. It’s called ‘About Town’, and it’s on display inside Marquette City Hall.

Nearly 40 Marquette–area artists painted small panels. The panels form large images of Marquette landmarks based on photographs. The Marquette Arts & Culture Center assisted the Lake Superior Art Association with the project.

“(Marquette artist) Judy Johnson took some of the pictures,” Michele Tuccini of the Lake Superior Art Association said. “I took two of the pictures. We brought them before the (Lake Superior Art Association) board at a meeting, and they selected the five. We were going to start with five, we would add more; we decided five was plenty.”

The lighthouse, Old City Hall, the Peter White Public Library, the Marquette County Courthouse and the Graveraet School fountain are the five landmarks shown in the larger images.

“We are working on giving them (the larger images formed out of the painted panels) to the buildings that they actually belong to, that they are,” Tuccini said. “We want the one from Graveraet to hang in Graveraet if we can get it accepted there as a donation.”

‘About Town’ was shown at the Arts and Culture Center earlier this year. The panels will be hanging inside City Hall until mid-January.
