Area educators testify on House curriculum bills

State Rep. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, on Wednesday welcomed Director Luke Siebert and retired Director Chuck Guay of the Delta County Technical Education Center, and Jay Kulbertis, superintendent of Gladstone Area Schools and Rapid River Public Schools, to provide House Education Committee testimony supporting House Bills 4465 and 4466.

The legislation increases flexibility in the Michigan Merit Curriculum graduation requirements to allow students to explore more career and vocational education options.

“I appreciate our local educators providing an Upper Peninsula perspective for this important discussion,” McBroom said. “While all students should have the opportunity to prepare for continuing their education and career goals not all of those avenues must lead to college studies for everyone. There are other options for students and their families to consider that also lead to good-paying skills and jobs they should be part of the system.”
