Annual food distribution held at U.P. State Fairgrounds
ESCANABA — The Community Action Agency held their quarterly food distribution in Escanaba at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. The Emergency Food Assistance Program provided food and nutrition to low income-residents at no cost.
A line of cars stretched down and around the corner waiting to reach the building’s front doors. Over three-hundred families benefited from the donations. Families in need received a variety of different foods including canned goods and non-perishables. Today’s menu even included a frozen chicken.
Escanaba Senior Center Administrator, Naomi Fletcher said, “From 9-am to 12-pm we distribute commodities that has been donated by USDA to low-income families. Today we have distribute to at least 365 different families.”
The food distribution is held the first Friday of every quarter month. Fletcher say’s that they are in desperate need of more volunteers. Volunteers are asked to help pack and distribute the food.
“It is important not only this time of the year but through out the year because families in need are families in need and they really do need the assistance. All of them are very appreciative of receiving this assistance.”
