Alger County Sheriff warns of dangerous ice conditions

ALGER COUNTY — The Alger County Sheriff’s Office wants to encourage the public to exercise extreme caution given the unstable and unsafe ice conditions in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office and rangers at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a report of a person who fell through the ice in the east channel of Munising Bay this morning. That person was able to rescue themselves and recover from the incident.

Alger County Sheriff Robert Hughes is encouraging people to stay off ice in the channels. He added that the ice bridge that people may have become accustomed to last year is no longer there. The Sheriff also said that people should not attempt to walk on the ice all the way to Grand Island.
