Alger County Animal Shelter enters Dog Days of Summer with rummage sale

From Ironwood to Sault Ste. Marie, dogs have a special place in Yoopers’ hearts.

This weekend, as we enter the dog days of summer, the Alger County Animal Shelter is hoping people find it in their hearts to give back to their four-legged friends at their annual rummage sale.

It starts this Saturday at 9 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m.

There will be a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle; there’s even a vinyl-sided doghouse that will be raffled off. The custom-built pooch palace was donated by a construction class at Munising High School.

All of the items up for sale were provided by members of the community free of charge, allowing the shelter to continue to take in nearly 300 surrendered or lost animals from Alger County and beyond, every year.

“We do take animals from downstate, once in a while, from overcrowded shelters. We’ll take a dog that’s in dire straights to our shelter and meet at the bridge,” said Kathy Glish, Manager at the Alger County Animal Shelter. “We have volunteers that go down to the bridge and we’ll meet a van coming up. We’ll take dogs that are in high-kill shelters. Occasionally, we’ll even take cats when it’s overcrowded down there.”

Last year, they raised close to $3,00. This year, they may be able to eclipse that mark thanks to the overwhelming support.

“This is amazing. The generosity of the community has been wonderful. We have more stuff this year than ever before. All sorts of new stuff.  We have so much stuff we’re going to be giving some of it away for free.”

If you can’t make it out to the rummage sale, which is being hosted by the Tri-County Volunteer Fire Department at no cost, you can still help.
