Alcohol may have been a factor in a snowmobile accident on Portage Lake

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a snowmobile accident on Portage Lake Saturday.

Deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the incident in which a 43 year old man on a snowmobile fell through the ice on Portage Lake.

Because the location was uncertain, the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Houghton Police Department, Hancock Police Department, MTU Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Houghton Fire Department, Hurontown Fire Department, Bookjack Fire and Rescue, Mercy Ambulance.

The snowmobiler was located near Dollar Bay and was transported to Portage Hospital and treated for his injuries.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor and the incident is still under investigation.
