Alcohol believed to be a factor in Ely Township ATV crash

A 40-year-old Ishpeming man was charged with operating an ATV while intoxicated after crashing into a wooded area in front of a residence Ely Township.

The driver was heading north on County Road 581 in a 2007 Honda ATV near County Road CPA around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night when he lost control, veered to the right off of the shoulder, and crashed into a group of trees in a nearby front yard. He was wearing a helmet at the time and was transported to Marquette General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and charged him with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. If the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office corroborates the charge, it will be his third offense. He was also believed to be driving with a suspended license.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by Ely Township First Responders and Bell Hospital EMS.
