Accidental Shooting While Hunting

its the first day of firearm deer season in michigan and an accident has already been reported in marquette county.

A 15-year-old girl from Gwinn is recovering from injuries after accidentally shooting herself while tracking a deer this morning.

It happened just before 9:30 on County road IAA in Michigamme Township, near the Kennecott Eagle Mine.

The teenager was hunting with her father.

She shot a deer, and it ran off.

While following the blood trail, the girl chambered a second round but failed to engage the safety.

The gun went off and the round passed through her left foot.

The girl’s father drove her to the security building at the Eagle Mine site.

The site’s emergency personnel provided medical care until Powell Township EMS and Marquette General EMS arrived.

The incident remains under investigation.
