9 Year Old Recieves Heart Transplant

Just last Thursday we brought you the story of 9 year old Griffin Helsten, an Ishpeming resident suffering from a rare heart condition.

And now we have an update as Griffin makes a big stride on the road to recovery.

Griffin under went surgery yesterday to receive a new heart.

Shortly after being diagnosed with the rare heart condition Griffin required pace maker surgery. But it was inevitable that he would eventually need a heart transplant. Griffin had been on the transplant waiting list in Milwaukee.

ABC 10 news now spoke with Griffins grandfather who says that the surgery went very well and Griffin is doing great with his new heart.

Last week community members came together for a benefit to support Griffin but he still has a long way to go. Another fundraiser is being held in Griffins honor on February 25th from 2-8 pm at the Ishpeming Armory. All of the proceeds raised will help Griffin and his family offset medical costs and travel expenses.
