Dead River Derby prepares for Saturday bout

MARQUETTE — If you’re looking for a contact sport to enjoy at Lakeview Arena, but can’t wait until this fall’s NHL preseason game – the Dead River Derby team has you covered.

On the flat–track at Lakeview Arena, Marquette’s roller derby team has two practices this week; both separating them from their upcoming bout on Saturday.

Dead River Derby member, Glory Sparks explained, “(The) doors open at 5 p.m., the bout will be at 6 p.m. And we are meeting up with Duluth’s Ship-Wreckers, coming over from Duluth, Minnesota.”

Sparks says this match-up is unique because these teams have yet to play each other and so no one knows what to expect.

“It’s the first time that we have a chance to meet up with them, so we’re not exactly sure what kind of hard competitors we’ll be going up against. But roller derby is always fun and full contact; so we like to do our best and play hard.”

The team is currently looking for volunteer referees, should any local hockey players be interested in being part of the fun.
To enjoy as a spectator, tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
