HESSEL — A man walking in the woods near his home needed help finding his way back this weekend.
The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office were called out to the scene near Hessel on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. to investigate the lost man who called 911 and told dispatch that he was walking in the woods a few miles from his residence when he became lost.
The man fell into a creek and notified police that his cell phone battery was about to die. Authorities eventually lost contact with the man.
Emergency responders from several agencies assisted in the search. GPS coordinates helped police narrow their search perimeter.
The rough terrain and fading daylight made the investigation very difficult. Police looked for the lost man on foot.
Four hours after the search began, police found the missing man. He was taken by ambulance to Mackinac Straits Hospital for treatment of hypothermia and minor injuries.
The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to always leave travel plans with family or friends whenever they venture out into the woods.
Pickford Fire and EMS, United States Border Patrol and the Michigan State Police assisted the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office in locating the lost hiker.
