Alleged scam artist arrested by police

ST. IGNACE — Police have arrested a man on numerous charges of fraud and larceny for allegedly conning women.

Troopers with the Michigan State Police St. Ignace post arrested 38-year-old James Max Hughes of Mancelona, MI on Wednesday. Hughes is accused of meeting women on an online dating website using a false name, initiating a dating relationship with them and conning them out of money after gaining their trust.

Hughes has received private loans, vehicles and other good and services from numerous people and businesses by using a false identity.  Hughes is said to have committed these crimes in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
