Gas prices for the holidays

ISHPEMING — According to AAA Michigan, 3.2 million Michiganders will travel 50 miles or more for the upcoming holidays.

Gas prices are currently averaging $1.82 a gallon in the state, but prices could temporarily be going up. Patrick DeHaan, a Senior Petroleum Analyst for GasBuddy.com says that a possible increase at the pump is due to a couple of refinery problems.

“You may see a big jump at the pump today,” said DeHaan. BP had an issue with a valve last week and Exxon Mobil’s refinery in Joliet, Illinois also had some minor issues. It’s caused wholesale prices to move up ever so slightly.”

At this time last year, gas prices were around $2.40 a gallon. DeHaan doesn’t see gas prices returning into that price range anytime soon.

“The lower oil prices are opening the door for cheaper gas prices. The only thing right now getting in the way are those minor refinery issues,” said DeHaan. “Once those are fixed, we could see gas prices make a run at new 8–year lows, so don’t be surprised if you see prices at the pump drifting lower.”
