EAGLE RIVER — The counties of Houghton and Keweenaw will continue to share the same prosecuting attorney for the time being.

That’s according to Attorney General Bill Schuette who appointed Houghton County Prosecutor Michael Makinen as Special Prosecutor in March of this year after the license to practice law of then Keweenaw County Prosecutor Donna Jaaskelainen was suspended by the state. A review board found her to be in neglect of three separate legal matters.

The suspension was originally for 180 days and required Jaaskelainen to petition for reinstatement. According to the State Attorney Grievance Commission, she still has not filed such a petition.

Makinen’s appointment was extended in September and again on December 10th, this time until March 10, 2016.

The office is up for re-election next November.
