UPDATE: Two dead following vehicle fire in Portage Township

UPDATE: Wednesday, May 9th 3:30 p.m.

The two victims of the truck fire that occurred in Portage Township on Sunday morning have been identified. The Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that 19 year-old Joshua Michael Becia of Portage Township and 19 year-old Jay Henry Stevens of Painesdale were the two individuals discovered inside of the vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation.


PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — Two people are dead following a vehicle fire on Sunday morning in Portage Township.

At approximately 9:42 a.m., deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the Donken/Tapiola Road in Portage Township on report of a vehicle fire. The Otter Lake Fire Department extinguished the fire, and deputies discovered two bodies inside of the vehicle.

The identities of the two people are unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Houghton County Medical Examiner and the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall are assisting the Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies with the investigation.
