ESCANABA — The 2016 Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year was honored this morning at the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba.

This year’s honoree is Tom DeCarlo of Ironwood. The American Legion Post in Bessemer nominated him for the award.
DeCarlo served in the United States Navy during World War II. He says receiving this type of an honor from his fellow veterans means everything to him.

“It’s heartwarming to see all of these people out on a nice sun shining day and the people that are assembled here- the government state and nation,” said DeCarlo. “I appreciate this and we’ll be back next year. I’ll be a year older but I’m going to be here.”

“Through his work, especially with the American Legion, Thomas has made it clear that opportunities each and everyday to put our love of country to good use and helping our fellow citizens,” said State Rep. Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan).

DeCarlo received a number of awards and honors, including the famous winter jacket with the words ‘U.P. Veteran of the Year’ on the back. Tom says he plans on wearing that jacket all winter long.
