2,000 Still Without Electricity

The storm clean-up continues across Upper Michigan today, and as of 1:45 p.m., the Upper Peninsula Power Company still had about 2,052 customers without power in Houghton, Iron River, Ishpeming, and Munising.

Utility crews are continue to work to restore power. UPPCO expects to get most service restored by later tonight but it likely that some customers will be off until tomorrow.

The “unloading” of snow is hampering the restoration efforts: when the wet heavy snow piled up on trees, it caused the limbs to sag into power lines and caused outages. Occasionally, according to UPPCO, after initially having restored the lines to service, the tree limbs “unload” of the snow and they rise back up and may make contact with the lines causing a second outage.

UPPCO officials also remind area residents to check on elderly, disabled or anyone who you think would need assistance during this outage.
