2 Arrests in Unlawful Imprisonment & Rape Case

A bizarre series of events has led to the arrests of two Marquette County residents.

63-year-old Calvin Martz has been arraigned in Marquette County District Court on five felony counts.

The charges range from three counts of assaulting, resisting and obstructing police officers to criminal sexual conduct and unlawful imprisonment.

He’s in the Marquette County Jail on $3.5 million bond.

The charges stem from the alleged unlawful imprisonment and rape of the daughter of his co–defendant.

Police say the case started out as a missing persons case involving the co–defendant’s 31-year-old daughter.

When police went to the home Martz shared with 62-year-old Karen Kirby in Michigamme Township last Friday night, they encountered resistance, including pepper spray.

The missing daughter was found and removed from the scene.

Karen Kirby was arraigned today on a felony charge of unlawful imprisonment.

Her bond is set at $500,000.

A preliminary exam for both of them has been set for May 27th.
