The city of Houghton is inviting the public to enjoy a newly renovated landmark.  ABC Ten’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen was given an inside look at the Birthplace of Professional Hockey.

More than 100 years ago, the first professional hockey game was played in Houghton.

Dee Stadium was built in 1928 after the original building was lost in a fire.  This year, the city has invested roughly $135,000 in renovations at the Dee.

Including the grand ballroom that, most recently, was a skateboard park.  But now it’s been restored to its former glory.  Not long ago, the ice arena was upgraded but now it was time for the locker rooms to get a makeover.

Still serving as home ice for the Portage Lake Pioneers…and the Houghton High School hockey team…Dee Stadium continues to be a gem in the area.
